Day 1 Green Juicing Reboot

Being an obesityi and weight loss specialist, I get asked by patients at least twice/week if it is safe for them to "juice" and what I think about it. This had made me look into it more from a scientific and medical point but my answers to patients was mostly from a medical standpoint and to be honest, there is not much you can find about juicing in medical textbooks! There are some data about benefits of 12 hour fasting on improvement of blood sugar control in diabetics and pre-diabetics but not much about other health condiditons.

An elderly gentleman came in for a visit earlier today. He has severe Barrett’s esophagus, meaning the lining of his esophagus is severely damaged by the stomach acid over the years. If left untreated, Barrett’s esophagus can lead to cancer. His gastroenterologist performed an endoscopy and took multiple biopsies of the area which proved the diagnosis. He then recommended him to take a high dose (40mg twice/day) of a proton pump inhibitor Esomeprazole (Nexium) for the next 6 months.

Walk with a Doc-Santa Monica

Thank you for all the support of our old members and the new members. Our Saturday walk went great. we started to do more of a brisk walk this time, so we finished in a little less than an hour. I hope we can expand our distance and make this 60 min a great sweat time for all of us.

Drink More #water and lose more #weight

According to Dr. Jon Ebbert *, professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, “drinking water in lieu of sugar-sweetened beverages has been shown to reduce total energy intake, increase the feeling of fullness, reduce the perception of hunger, and increase energy expenditure.” He quotes a research where water consumption of participants in a weight loss program was measured.
